Every media organization maintains an immense content archive, typically stored across multiple on-premises storage systems. Content that in many cases has been collected over decades, some of it in hard-to-retrieve formats, or worse, in systems that are no longer serviceable. To make matters worse, much of the content in most archives has limited descriptive and technical metadata, which makes finding specific pieces of content difficult, particularly if you want to search for anything (such as actors, locations, style, etc.) other than perhaps a simple title. If you can’t find the content you need, and you can’t access it from where it is stored, that content has lost all value.
Given how much value is locked up in most content archives, it only makes sense to rethink where those archives are located, and how the content is managed. Taking a practical perspective, maintaining multiple on-premises storage systems is time- and resource-consuming. From electrical power to HVAC to tape drive migrations, the cost to keep archive systems up and running is not insignificant (in addition to the cost of the raw hardware itself). Add in the difficulty of generating and managing the metadata needed to find and monetize content effectively, and it’s no wonder that many media companies are looking for better alternatives.
For these reasons, businesses are looking at whether the cloud is a better option for their content archives. The cloud offers highly efficient and resilient compute and storage resources, and as we’ve reported recently, mostly powered by renewable resources. The cloud also offers location independence and simultaneous accessibility by remote workers, making content more readily available to today’s distributed workforce.
But moving an archive to the cloud is about far more than just making a copy of your archive in Amazon S3. It represents a one-time opportunity to reset the why, what, and how content archives will be managed.
To fully utilize the automation and decision-making capabilities of your Rally supply chains, you need as much information as possible about the media going into it. For content coming out of deep archive, that has historically meant big headaches for operators who needed to manually inspect the content and capture relevant info. But today, tools such as AWS Rekognition and Google Video Intelligence for AI, or Interra Baton and Venera Quasar for auto QC, have changed the game: there has never been a better and easier time to enrich archived media with metadata. Restoring files from archive or Glacier and optimizing them for the supply chain is no longer such a time-consuming process.
Operators don’t need to painstakingly evaluate files in detail when AI and auto QC can find the points of interest automatically and generate time-based metadata (TBMD) files, which in turn allows them to view and select the relevant metadata to either associate with the content or look exactly where they need to.
Operators can view the metadata by loading workorders into a manual QC process, where all the TBMD is made available for review.
AI can be set to show items with a certain confidence level and, depending on the configuration and the code logic in the supply chain, decisions can be made automatically or sent to back to operators for manual review.
Not only will AI find metadata such as the kind described above, but it can also be used for converting speech to text by using transcription tools like AWS Transcribe, thus automatically generating subtitles. Or it can be used for optical character recognition (OCR) to detect text in the media, which can be extracted and shown to an operator.
Automatic QC generates TBMD that assists in the manual review process, allowing operators to quickly find faults and verify other key information in the media.
The media can then be rejected or enhanced downstream through other edits or transcodes.
All of this allows you to know what you have from the start and put the metadata for your content in order before it enters the supply chain.
