Watch: How ITV Leveraged Cloud Computing to Decarbonize its Media Supply Chain
At the recent Media Technology Sustainability Summit, Matt Price shared how ITV has employed cloud efficiency to help it achieve its sustainability goals using SDVI Rally and AWS.
Price, along with our Chris Brähler and AWS’ Jason O’Malley, shared how a cloud-based approach charts a course for a more sustainable future in M&E. You can watch the replay here.
The event’s organizers, Kibo121 and Dovetail Creative, put on virtual and in-person events designed to move the industry toward greater sustainability. At next month’s IBC show, here’s what you can see:
- Greening of Streaming activities and developments | Friday, Sept 13, 15:00 in Room E105.
- The Corporate Star Awards | Friday, Sept 13, 18:00 at the Okura Hotel
- Sustainability in Action: Real-World Case Studies from Media Tech Leaders | Sunday, Sept 15, 10:00 in Room E102.
Supply Chain Thinking
Maximizing Efficiency, Minimizing Impact With Sustainable Media Supply Chains
Chris Brähler, VP of Product
Concern over the environmental impact of industry is not just becoming more commonplace – its becoming more “structural”. What do I mean by that? While regulations are being developed — particularly in Europe and select regions of the U.S. — that aim to curb carbon emissions and reduce waste, we likewise see businesses proactively integrating sustainability considerations into their corporate missions and their business plans.
As organizations seek to deliver on their sustainability goals, the carbon footprint of our tech stacks are under scrutiny. Many RFPs now include a requirement that vendors account for the impact of our products. SDVI can confidently respond that our cloud-based media supply chains deliver real sustainability gains, with energy consumption data that allows organizations to credibly report on their environmental impact.
So what makes cloud-based media supply chains so effective?
In the blog, we examine the unique factors that make sustainability possible on the Rally platform: right-sized resource consumption, more efficient use of resources, and the data that allows us to accurately report on, continually reduce, and verifiably offset carbon emissions.

(Another) Case for Lean Media Supply Chains
Designing a lean media supply chain is important to organizations in competitive times because it reduces costs, increases efficiency, and minimizes manual effort. But don’t overlook the fact that it also plays a significant role in meeting sustainability targets. A lean approach to media supply chain design doesn’t just streamline processes and save money: it also helps decrease the carbon footprint of your operations.
Rally already increases efficiencies by dynamically provisioning infrastructure. However, there are choices you can make in the design of your supply chain that remove unnecessary processing and significantly decrease the amount of resource needed to run that supply chain. Those include:
- Eliminating redundant steps
- Consolidating workflows across departments
- Automating tasks
- Embedding manual tasks into the supply chain
Such optimization reduces energy consumption and the overall environmental impact of your operations.
Some things to look for if you want to create leaner, “greener” supply chains:
- Can you create fewer proxy versions?
- Can you reduce the movement of files between cloud and on-prem storage?
- Can you use long-term storage more selectively, storing only unique components?
- Can you utilize just-in-time manufacturing of assets to create only the versions of content that are required?
- Can you reduce quality checks by QCing the master, then test and trust subsequent processes?
When you find opportunities like these to streamline your supply chain, you realize a compound benefit: you not only save on resource consumption and therefore cost, you also save on carbon expenditure. This gives your organization a 1-2 punch: better operational efficiency and more sustainable business practices.

New in Rally
Constantly Improving on Resource Utilization
While the Rally platform is continually updated for new functionality and optimal usability, it is also improved for resource efficiency.
What do those improvements look like over time?
This chart demonstrates how much more content processing we’ve gotten out of Rally year-over-year, even as the runtime of our jobs remains virtually flat. That exponential improvement makes for more sustainable supply chains. After all, you don’t have to offset resources you don’t use.
But Rally customers don’t need to offset their carbon footprint at all: our Net-zero Supply Chains program takes care of that for you, reporting on and offsetting the CO2 generated by your supply chains, including all 3rd-party applications.
